The Phase II award was made after Sentinel Devices identified Air Force customers with an emerging need that could be met using the company’s OTAware technology
Sentinel Devices announces it has been selected by AFWERX for a SBIR Phase II focused on developing OTAware to address the most pressing challenges in the Department of the Air Force (DAF). The Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) process by accelerating the small business experience through faster proposal to award timelines, changing the pool of potential applicants by expanding opportunities to small business and eliminating bureaucratic overhead by continually implementing process improvement changes in contract execution. The DAF began offering the Open Topic SBIR/STTR program in 2018 which expanded the range of innovations the DAF funded and now on 02/05/2024, Sentinel Devices will start its journey to create and provide innovative capabilities that will strengthen the national defense of the United States of America.
Sentinel Devices’ CEO, Dr.Forrest Shriver, had this to say: “This award by the Air Force is extremely impactful, because it shows how useful our zero-cloud approach can be to security-sensitive defense objectives. We will be working closely with our Air Force partners to demonstrate the OTAware technology and, ultimately, make it useful for them in supporting maintenance and sustainment across the Air Force and across the DoD at large.”

About Sentinel Devices
Sentinel Devices was founded to commercialize“zero-cloud” machine learning technologies for critical infrastructure monitoring and cybersecurity, with the goal of making industrial equipment totally self-monitoring and self-reporting. The company’s core technology, OTAware, is a machine monitoring/asset monitoring solution which functions totally off of the cloud – it does all data collection, storage, processing, machine learning model development, and decision-making entirely on-device,alongside the equipment being monitored. By monitoring specific physical signals found within the “digital brains” of industrial equipment, OTAware gives customers the ability to reduce total downtime by up to 30% - saving potentially millions of dollars per-year. The OTAware technology is packaged into an easy-to-integrate rail-mounted form factor which can be readily mounted alongside existing equipment, with minimal changes made to existing equipment or infrastructure. By doing all data processing local to the equipment,Sentinel Devices delivers predictive maintenance and monitoring while ensuring that this sensitive data is never sent off-site. This enables monitoring of even the most security-sensitive assets – customers are in total control of where the data goes and how it’s used.
